Disinfection & Outbreak Response Cleaning in Florida

This is the part most facilities get wrong. Enveloped viruses like influenza, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2 are relatively fragile and are killed by most common EPA-registered disinfectants including quaternary ammonium products. Non-enveloped viruses like norovirus are far tougher and survive many of those same products entirely.

That means a facility responding to a vomiting incident with the same spray it uses for a flu wipe-down has not disinfected anything — it has moved live virus around with a cloth. Norovirus requires a product with a specific norovirus claim, commonly a chlorine-based solution at correct concentration, and EPA maintains lists by pathogen for exactly this reason.

Every EPA-registered disinfectant carries a label contact time — the number of minutes the surface must remain visibly wet for the kill claim to be valid. It ranges from thirty seconds to ten minutes depending on the product and organism. Spraying and immediately wiping produces a clean surface, not a disinfected one, and this single error accounts for most failed disinfection in the field.

It also means you cannot simply buy a stronger product to go faster. Our crews are trained to work rooms in an order that lets contact time elapse naturally, and the contact time for each product is stated in the protocol document you receive.

Disinfectants are deactivated by organic soil. A surface with visible residue, grease, or body fluid must be cleaned first and disinfected second; skipping the cleaning step means the disinfectant is consumed by the soil before it reaches the pathogen. Two steps, always, and any protocol that describes only one is wrong.

For body fluid incidents there is an additional step: containment. Disposable PPE, treatment of a wide radius around the visible incident because aerosolised droplets travel much further than people expect, disposal of materials as contaminated waste, and no vacuuming of the area until it has been decontaminated.

For existing contract clients we prioritise outbreak calls and can usually be on site same day or next morning in Hillsborough County, and within a scheduled response window elsewhere in Florida. You receive a written record of the areas treated, the products used, their EPA registration numbers, and the contact times observed — which matters if you have to answer to a health department, a school board, or a corporate parent.

What we will not do is oversell. We do not claim a facility is 'sterile' or 'virus-free' — no cleaning contractor can guarantee that, and anyone who does is misleading you. We remove and inactivate pathogens on treated surfaces to the standard the product supports, and we document exactly what was done.
